2026-01-23_13:41:00 Revit Template

Design Bureau Poutvaara completed a new development project last year, an improved Revit template, which is the starting basis for a project in the Revit BIM-program. The template has pre-prepared groundwork for design projects, and new versions of this can also be made by the type of a project.

A suitable basic package for the basis of Revit building information modelling: 5,000 pages of English-language guides contain the essential basic concepts.

The basis for competence of development is the books of the Wiley publishing house’s Sybex publishing group, all of whose basic works have been reviewed. The supplement came from the Ascent publishing house, and lighter there was familiarized the Robot add-on program. Actually, sufficient professional additional help for creating new template bases only came from an AI assistant and by utilizing a commercial model template. However, using AI requires that one masters the basics in English and knows how to use the program. Using AI replaces most of the benefits of conventional program consultants or courses, as AI manages the basic advice of programs. Using AI was simply based on the realization that its current level is sufficient to replace program consultants at a basic level, when the operator himself knows the basic concepts to a sufficient extent and the operator knows what to ask and masters the terminology. I do not any more need invoicing program consultants who manage the basics, because I get better information practically for free from artificial intelligence.

Design Bureau Poutvaara has developing capabilities to produce model templates for other planning parties; two ready-made versions of the most important sectors are ready: Architectural and Structural Design Templates. These go by the model names: AR Poutvaara and RA Poutvaara, which are both in metric format and include two language options: Finnish and English. At the latest, they are available with the latest 2026 Revit version.

My own copyrights fully cover here the following four topics:

I Talo 2000 and Poutvaara 2022 Keynotes and Assembly Codes (The Talo 2000 system, published by Haahtela development and Rakennustieto, is applied here).

II Shared parameter file to the extent that it covers all information related to the project and sheets.

III All title blocks and sheet templates with 22 fixed-size official bases, 23 fixed presentation use bases, a parametrically editable official base (self-developed) and all of these in both Finnish and English, producing documentation content that meets RT requirements and building supervision officials’ requirements in both graphic and text format.

IV The actual project

Nimiöt and piirrospohjat are linked to the same entity, Title Blocks and Sheets in English. Its graphic elements and texts are further defined in parameters:

Related are thirty project-specific parameters (determined per project at the beginning of the project) and thirty sheet-specific parameters (which can be presented separately for each sheet) are still linked to the drawing templates, and these are in both Finnish and English. So I can produce the documentation required by the Finnish building supervision, but also a graphically equivalent export version in English.

The parametrically scalable drawing templates and fixed size drawing templates that I have developed are among the most advanced in Finland. For my work, I have evaluated international examples, but of course also RT- and ISO- standards and seen practical examples. However, the greatest emphasis has been on artistic graphic design and practical requirements.

Swedish-language templates would have been successful too, but they were not made, because I use Swedish too seldom. The new language version could be created in about a week, but meeting the graphic format standards of foreign title blocks would require graphic design that would take longer. At this point, they are only available in CAD format. Revit is available in the following languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Polish, Czech, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. My own modest goal at this stage is to use Revit in English, design in Finnish and English and produce documentation in Finnish or English. I can produce documentation practically identically in two languages.

The drawing templates are based on the Poutvaara drawing templates 2022, developed for more than ten years, which are for CAD use, and their newer application is the Poutvaara Revit drawing templates 2025 developed for Revit use, which are part of the Poutvaara Revit Project Template 2025. Revit and CAD printing are very significantly different at the program level, although the printed end result could look the same. There is technical compatibility only from a graphical point of view.

Revit and AutoCAD -programs are suitable for combined use. At the beginning of the year, for example, I made an 80-hectare terrain model from a map with CAD, from which I implemented a Toposurface -model with Revit. AutoCAD printing works by defining for a Layout a template, that is so-called Drawing Template, which is drawn as its own file and which it takes its views from the model space. In CAD the variable texts are treated as annotations and tags. Since Revit was originally developed by another company, its terminology is different. It uses a Title block file editable family, which is located in Project Template under the Annotation Symbols family category, and its printing is in the Sheets views, over which the views are placed. In Revit the variable texts are treated as labels and fixed texts as text elements, and annotation families can also be added, including, for example, parametrically defined text information or graphic families. On a practical level, the terminology and the description of functions are considerably more complicated. Both CAD and Revit produce PDF files, but with slightly different methods. The main focus is that Revit is a three-dimensional purely building design BIM-program, BIM meaning Building Information Modelling, whereas AutoCAD is more widely applied generally used program.

Although Poutvaara Revit Template 2025 has been completed, it can still be developed, such as defining new templates for other building types, and it also develops by project branch. There is no need for development in Poutvaara Revit title blocks, they are easily modified when the company changes and they are quite sufficient for emerging needs and would be suitable for practically any Revit project implemented in Finland. However, essential is the metric -definition: I have ended up using the metric system for region-specific and cost -reasons, although I have also used imperial measurements with the Revit program - however, there is no demand for them in the EU region. Imperial dimensions are only used in Great Britain, Canada, the United States and Burma, but in Finland they are mostly only known through Revit guides. Historical dimensions have also been used in Finland and can be found in historical buildings and construction products.

Actually, due to copyright reasons, I do not own all the rights to the original parts of the commercial Revit Templates I use, and they also have my own data attached to them, but I can offer as a Revit consulting service all of my own expertise, modified: it could be, for example, developing services of the existing shared parameter files, in the development of company-specific standards, such as consulting advice in the company-specific development of the Talo 2000 -system; and graphic company-specific standards. For example, developing a Template offered by a third-party commercial cooperation company by adding parameters and drawing templates would be an example of a consulting opportunity. These work, for example, using ready manuals for programming and use of the drawing templates. In terms of time management, I see my main job in the future to be developing my own use of Revit, but as a sideline and socially, there is still an expert and consulting option. The role of the architect as the main designer also includes the role of providing templates for other design parties. This role applies especially to large multidisciplinary planning projects. There are thirty design role parties known in Finland, the most common of which are AR and RA (Architectural and Structural). The challenge in Finland is that Revit is mainly used by large or academically trained parties.

My own Revit training background before the template project was 1000+ hours and using experience of 3000+ hours, but in my opinion, architects should learn to use the Revit program themselves so that they can produce better quality designs. Here, I can mainly refer to my own expertise, the starting point of which has been practical requirements. Actually, the Revit program is available at the architecture departments of universities of applied sciences and universities, but there have not been courses for it in the past and most companies in Finland use ArchiCAD. From that point of view, I would probably be able to act as Revit trainer, but no organization provides sufficient training in terms of hours, and I have found that one can only learn sufficient skills in own company by familiarizing the subject and using the program. I know that my skills are complex, and I don’t think that my own example in managing Revit use would generally help to make Revit an easier program to use, because I have used Revit for more than 4000 hours and I have 5000 pages of manuals on my bookshelf. Besides this, my working languages are native Finnish and English, which is still rarer in Finland.

I already have one model project from the application of the new Revit Template that I developed, where I have found that the template works and produces a sufficient level of documentation. At the same time, my own Revit title block templates have also been found to work and be valid, but their development has been a long, multi-phased project. In principle, they would be suitable as a basis for a national RT standard or as a general title block model for Revit work, but several of the largest Finnish offices that use Revit could say the same, and besides, the practice in Finland is that all offices develop their own drawing standards, but also acquire those parts from few consultants. On the other hand, I also represent the expertise of architectural graphics, which has also been developed by my other visual arts, as well as my digital art, CAD design and building information modelling. Perhaps, alongside the four other startup companies there could be achieved a designated architecture branch field that utilizes Revit expertise.
